Product Role & System Fit

The GE IC693BEM331N is not an I/O point module but rather the communication interface that allows Series 90-30 PLCs to speak with the distributed I/O network. Specifically, it interfaces the PLC backplane to the Genius Bus network, enabling bi-directional data flow between the controller and remote I/O nodes such as discrete input/output blocks, analog modules, and special-purpose field devices.

Once installed in a Series 90-30 rack, the module uses the PLC’s 5 VDC backplane power supply (drawing less than 300 mA) and communicates over the Genius Bus protocol at standard data rates. Its support for up to 128-byte exchanges — both transmitted and received — ensures that significant I/O data can be shared in a single scan cycle. These bytes can map to multiple point states, analog values, or control flags, giving the PLC a comprehensive view of the distributed I/O without saturating the bus.

The module also works in systems that include remote I/O drops or legacy Series 90-70 racks connected via appropriate bus interface units. This flexibility means customers with mixed-generation hardware can integrate portions of their control network without costly rewiring.
