Product Introduction & Supply Chain Strategy

The HARLAND SIMON H4890P5008 is a 500W industrial power supply that delivers stable 24 VDC to PLC racks, I/O modules, sensors, and actuators in automated production lines. Common deployments include automotive assembly, packaging machinery, and material handling systems where voltage ripple below 150 mV ensures noise-sensitive analog cards operate correctly.

Buying this as New Surplus delivers a total cost of ownership (TCO) advantage. OEM list prices run 40-60% higher for identical factory-sealed units. Refurbished units carry hidden risk: degraded primary capacitors fail within 6-12 months, triggering unplanned downtime at 5,000-50,000 per hour in lost production. Our new surplus stock provides 10-15 year expected service life, verifiable serial numbers, and a 2-year warranty. For EOL-sensitive plants, we recommend strategic hoarding of 2-3 units before HARLAND SIMON announces discontinuation.

Installation & Configuration Guide

Stage 1: Pre-Installation (Prep & Safety)

  • Lock out and tag out (LOTO) the upstream 230 VAC breaker. Verify zero voltage with a multimeter.
  • Tools: #2 Phillips screwdriver, flathead terminal driver, ESD wrist strap grounded to rack.
  • Take a photo of the existing power supply’s terminal wiring (L, N, PE, +V, -V). Mark wire positions with masking tape.

Stage 2: Removal

  • Disconnect input and output wires – note which terminals use ferrule ends vs. bare copper.
  • Remove the four mounting screws (M4). Pull the unit straight out. Do NOT rock side-to-side – this bends the DIN rail clip or chassis tabs.

Stage 3: Installation (Clone & Seat)

  • Mount the new H4890P5008 using original screws. Torque to 1.2 Nm (do not overtighten).
  • Reconnect wires exactly as photographed: L (brown), N (blue), PE (green/yellow) on input side; +V (red) and -V (black) on output side.
  • Verify polarity – reversed 24 VDC destroys downstream cards instantly.

Stage 4: Power-On & Testing

  • Re-engage the breaker. Measure output at the terminals: 24 VDC ±0.24 V.
  • Check LED status: Green = normal operation. Red or blinking = overload or short.
  • Load test: Apply 50% rated load (10 A) using a resistive bank. Voltage should stay within 23.76–24.24 V. Ripple should not exceed 150 mVp-p on an oscilloscope.

Firmware/Software Versions & Upgrade Notes

The H4890P5008 is an analog power supply with no firmware. No software configuration, no IP address, no programmable parameters.

Critical note: If replacing a different HARLAND SIMON model (e.g., H4890P3008 – 300W), verify the downstream current draw does not exceed 20.8 A. A 500W unit replacing a 300W unit is safe (headroom improves capacitor lifespan). Replacing a 500W with a 300W unit will trigger overload shutdown above 300W.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Why is this cheaper than OEM direct but more expensive than eBay refurbished units?
A: OEM sells at list price – we sell new surplus from overstocked authorized channels. eBay refurbished units use desoldered capacitors and repaired PCBs. Those fail. We’ve seen a packaging plant lose 18 hours of production to a $120 refurbished supply. You don’t save money when the line stops.

Q: Are these really new, or are they pulls from decommissioned machines?
A: New original. Factory-sealed anti-static bags. OEM packing slips included. Zero hours on the electrolytic capacitors. We never sell pulls, used, or repaired stock.

Q: Is this model obsolete or end-of-life (EOL)?
A: Not officially. But HARLAND SIMON has not issued a lifetime buy notice. Lead times have stretched to 8 weeks. We recommend keeping 2 units per critical cabinet as buffer stock.

Q: Can I hot-swap this power supply while the PLC is running?
A: No. Always power down upstream AC. Hot-swapping a 500W supply can arc the input terminals and blow the rectifier bridge. Downtime for safe replacement: 15 minutes.

Q: Does the new supply retain the old unit’s output settings?
A: No settings to retain. The output voltage is fixed at 24 VDC via internal trim pot (factory-set). Do not adjust the pot unless you have a calibrated meter.

Q: What is your warranty?
A: 2 years from invoice date. Covers manufacturing defects only. Does not cover reverse polarity, overloading beyond 20.8 A continuous, or physical damage.

Q: Do you provide test reports?
A: Yes. Every H4890P5008 ships with a QC Test Report showing: input power-up, output voltage at 0%, 50%, and 100% load, ripple measurement, and efficiency at nominal load. Signed by the testing technician.
