Product Introduction & Supply Chain Strategy

The Moxa EDS-508A-MM-SC is an 8-port managed industrial Ethernet switch designed for critical automation infrastructure requiring managed network traffic, security controls, and sub-20ms ring redundancy. Featuring six copper RJ45 ports and two multi-mode fiber optic SC ports, it isolates field communications across distances up to 5 km while remaining immune to heavy electromagnetic interference (EMI) in power plants, water treatment facilities, and oil & gas installations.

Procuring the EDS-508A-MM-SC as New Surplus provides an immediate route to lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) without sacrificing network uptime. A failed managed switch halts entire SCADA control rings, taking downstream PLCs and HMIs offline. Unlike refurbished switches that often suffer from degraded optical transceivers, dry filter capacitors, or compromised flash memory from past thermal exposure, our New Surplus inventory guarantees original factory build quality, uncompromised network throughput, and full operational service life.

Installation & Configuration Guide

Stage 1: Pre-Installation (Prep & Safety)

  1. Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO): Isolate the 24/48 VDC power supply feed to the control enclosure before connecting wiring.
  2. Dust Caps: Keep rubber dust covers over the multi-mode SC fiber transceivers until the optical patch cables are connected to prevent contamination.
  3. ESD Protection: Wear a grounded wrist strap attached to panel ground before handling network connections or configuring hardware DIP switches.

Stage 2: Removal

  1. Unplug the 6-pin removable terminal block carrying dual VDC power inputs and fault relay alarm connections.
  2. Unclip all RJ45 Ethernet cables and press the retaining clips on SC fiber connectors to release them.
  3. Pull down the DIN-rail locking mechanism at the base of the metal housing and tilt the switch off the 35 mm DIN rail.

Stage 3: Installation (Clone & Seat)

  1. Hook the top latch of the switch’s rear clip onto the 35 mm DIN rail and press downward until the bottom clip locks into place.
  2. Re-plug all RJ45 cables and SC fiber connectors (ensuring correct TX to RX crossover configuration).
  3. Land the VDC power leads into the terminal block and tighten terminal screws firmly.
  4. Set hardware DIP switches on top of the chassis if activating hardware-based Turbo Ring configuration without web management login.

Stage 4: Power-On & Testing

  1. Apply 12/24/48 VDC power to PWR1 and PWR2 terminals. Verify PWR1 and PWR2 status LEDs turn solid green.
  2. Access the management console via default IP address 192.168.127.253 using an RJ45 serial console cable or web browser.
  3. Verify ring redundancy state (Master/Head vs. Member) and confirm zero frame drops across active copper and fiber links.

Firmware/Software Versions & Upgrade Notes

  • Management Software: Supports configuration via web browser, Telnet, Serial Console, or Moxa MXconfig software.
  • Redundancy Protocols: Fully supports Moxa Turbo Ring V1/V2, Turbo Chain, and standard RSTP/STP. Ensure all nodes in the redundant ring share matching ring protocol versions to prevent network loops.
  • Firmware Lineage: Always backup the current configuration file (.ini) before upgrading or replacing a field switch. If replacing a failed switch, flash the new unit to the same firmware revision as other switches in the ring network to ensure full protocol interoperability.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. Is this Moxa EDS-508A-MM-SC unit brand new or refurbished?

This unit is guaranteed 100% Original New Surplus (Batch/Serial Ref: D201427). It has never been deployed in an active cabinet, powered in a field environment, or pulled from decommissioned machinery. It remains preserved in original anti-static packaging and inspected for pristine condition.

2. Why is New Surplus superior to refurbished options for managed industrial switches?

Refurbished managed switches often carry hidden vulnerabilities—such as worn internal flash storage (EEPROM corruption risks), heat-degraded power supplies, and reduced optical power from aged fiber transmitters. In a managed ring network, a single failing switch can trigger constant ring-coupling faults and network-wide latency spikes. New Surplus ensures original factory performance and complete operational integrity.

3. What is the difference between the EDS-308-MM-SC and the EDS-508A-MM-SC?

The EDS-308-MM-SC is an unmanaged switch with basic plug-and-play functionality. The EDS-508A-MM-SC is a fully managed switch supporting VLANs, Quality of Service (QoS), IGMP snooping, SNMP management, industrial fieldbus protocols (PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP), and sub-20ms Turbo Ring redundancy.

4. What fiber optic connections does this model require?

The features two 100BaseFX fiber ports using SC duplex connectors. It requires Multi-Mode fiber cables (50/125 µm or 62.5/125 µm) and supports transmission distances up to 5 km at a 1310 nm wavelength.

5. What warranty coverage applies to this controller?

We support this New Surplus Moxa with a full 1-year functional warranty. Every unit is visually inspected and bench-tested for power-on readiness prior to shipment.
