Product Introduction

Woodward 5466-1511 is a MicroNet CPU P1020 module and the preferred CPU for all new MicroNet Plus applications. Introduced in 2016, it uses a P1020 processor and supports MicroNet Coder 1.02+ with RTN modules 5466-1046 or 5466-1146.

This module replaced the 5466-1510 due to the “Urgent/11” VxWorks cybersecurity vulnerability. Customers with -1510 or -1520 CPUs can upgrade to -1511 or -1521 without charge. It is recommended by Woodward for all new MicroNet Plus installations and remains fully supported for spare units and repairs. The CPU can directly drive Woodward valves, servo position controllers, and RTCnet/LinkNet HT systems.

Troubleshooting Quick Reference

Symptom Possible Cause Relevance to this Part Quick Check Method Recommendation
CPU not recognized by chassis Poor backplane contact or wrong slot ✅ High Reseat CPU; inspect backplane pins for bending/corrosion Reseat carefully; verify slot matches MicroNet Plus requirements
No communication on Ethernet ports Network cable fault, wrong IP, or CPU fault ✅ High Ping the CPU IP; check cable continuity; verify subnet Check network config first; replace CPU if ping fails after confirming wiring
Coder version mismatch Using Coder 1.00–1.01 with this CPU ✅ High Check Coder version in software; must be 1.02+ for -1511 Upgrade Coder to 1.02+ or use -1510 (non-preferred) if Coder cannot be updated
RTN module not detected RTN module fault or incompatibility ✅ High Verify RTN is 5466-1046 or 5466-1146; reseat module Replace RTN if mismatched; confirm compatibility with CPU
Cybersecurity alert on network Legacy CPU (5200) still on network ✅ Medium Check network for older 5200 CPUs (1035, 1045, 1141) Upgrade legacy 5200 CPUs to P1020 (-1511/-1521) to eliminate vulnerability
Firmware update fails FPGA mismatch or corrupted boot image ✅ High Check FPGA version via service port; read diagnostic buffer Contact Woodward for FPGA/firmware update; post-2011 units can be updated
Slow scan time or timeouts Overloaded application or insufficient processing ✅ Medium Monitor CPU load; check application size vs processing capacity Optimize application or verify application fits P1020 capabilities
Red fault LED on CPU Hardware fault or firmware error ✅ High Read fault code via service software; check LED status chart Replace if hardware fault confirmed; Woodward supports repairs

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is the Woodward 5466-1511 still in production?
A: Yes. This is the preferred CPU for MicroNet Plus applications and is actively supported through 2032 (projected inactivation). It is recommended for all new installations.

Q: What does this module do?
A: It is the primary CPU for MicroNet Plus control systems, handling real-time control of gas turbines, diesel engines, or generator sets. It processes speed, temperature, and pressure data and communicates via Modbus, CANopen, Ethernet, RTN, and RTCnet/LinkNet HT.

Q: Why is this preferred over the 5466-1510?
A: The 5466-1510 has the “Urgent/11” VxWorks cybersecurity vulnerability. The -1511 fixed this vulnerability and is the only version recommended for new installations. Customers with -1510 can upgrade to -1511 without charge.

Q: Can I use this for a new system installation?
A: Yes, this is exactly what it’s recommended for. Woodward explicitly states to use CPU P1020 (5466-1511 or 5466-1521) for all MicroNet Plus applications.

Q: What Coder version do I need?
A: This CPU requires MicroNet Coder 1.02 or higher. If you’re using Coder 1.00–1.01, you need to use the non-preferred 5466-1510 (not recommended for new installations).

Q: Can I upgrade from an older 5200 CPU?
A: Yes. Woodward and GE strongly recommend upgrading legacy 5200 CPUs (5466-1035, 1045, 1141, 1245) to the P1020 CPU (5466-1511) to resolve security issues. In addition to fixing security vulnerabilities, the P1020 adds encrypted communications and user levels with secure password protection.

Q: Is this module hot-swappable?
A: No. CPUs in MicroNet Plus systems require careful handling. Power down before removal or installation to avoid damaging the backplane or other modules.

Q: What RTN modules are compatible?
A: This CPU works with RTN modules 5466-1046 and 5466-1146. Make sure your RTN module matches one of these part numbers.

Q: Why is this cheaper than buying new from the OEM?
A: Units sold as surplus may be unused new inventory or demo units. The lower price reflects available inventory, not a different operating principle. Always verify the condition and warranty terms.

Q: What should I check before ordering?
A: Confirm the exact part number (5466-1511), verify your Coder version is 1.02+, check your RTN module compatibility (5466-1046 or 5466-1146), and confirm the module condition (new vs unused surplus).
