Product Introduction & Supply Chain Strategy
This product is a Brand New Surplus unit. It is not used, not pulled from a decommissioned plant, and not refurbished. All modules undergo rigorous quality verification to ensure OEM-level reliability. The Allen-Bradley 1756-IM16I is an individually isolated 16-channel AC digital input card designed for ControlLogix chassis. Operating across 159–265V AC, each channel features its own dedicated return/common wire pair, allowing the card to safely monitor inputs from completely independent power phases, transformers, or separate motor control centers (MCCs) without risking cross-phase short circuits or ground loops.
Sourcing the 1756-IM16I as New Surplus is a crucial risk-mitigation strategy for high-voltage industrial facilities. Refurbished high-voltage AC cards often harbor unseen thermal degradation in optocouplers, micro-fissures in internal isolation barriers, or worn connector contacts caused by high ambient thermal stress. Installing a factory-fresh surplus unit guarantees full 250V continuous channel-to-channel isolation integrity, protecting downstream ControlLogix backplane electronics and ensuring uninterrupted plant operations.

Installation & Configuration Guide
1.Stage 1: Pre-Installation (Prep & Safety):Apply LOTO, verify high-voltage AC phase power, and wear static protection.
- Execute strict Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO) procedures on all 200/240V AC power feeds entering the field terminal enclosure.
- Put on a grounded Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) wrist strap attached to an unpainted metal surface on the cabinet frame.
- Verify wiring on the 36-pin Removable Terminal Block (1756-TBCH or 1756-TBS6H). Note that every input point requires its own dedicated signal and return connection (e.g.,
IN-0/COM-0throughIN-15/COM-15).
2.Stage 2: Removal:Disconnect 36-pin RTB and safely remove existing module from chassis.
- Depress the locking tab and pull the 36-pin Removable Terminal Block (RTB) forward to disconnect high-voltage wiring without disturbing individual conductors.
- Simultaneously squeeze the top and bottom module retention latches on the 1756-IM16I housing.
- Slide the module horizontally straight out of the chassis slot.
3.Stage 3: Installation (Clone & Seat):Align chassis rails, seat replacement card, and secure 36-pin RTB.
- Align the top and bottom circuit board edges of the replacement 1756- card with the chassis guide rails.
- Slide the card firmly into the chassis slot until both top and bottom latches snap securely onto the chassis rail.
- Re-attach the pre-wired 36-pin RTB onto the front face of the module and lock the latching lever.
4.Stage 4: Power-On & Testing:Restore power, observe module LED indicators, and verify live input tags.
- Re-apply power to the ControlLogix chassis power supply and field 220V AC control loops.
- Confirm that the module’s OK status LED illuminates solid green.
- Actuate connected field devices (auxiliary contacts, breaker statuses) and confirm that the corresponding point-level yellow status LEDs illuminate.
- Open Studio 5000 / RSLogix 5000 to verify that live input bits transition cleanly in the controller tag database.
Firmware/Software Versions & Upgrade Notes
- Software Compatibility: Compatible with all versions of Studio 5000 Logix Designer and RSLogix 5000.
- Terminal Block Requirement: Because each of the 16 channels has an independent common terminal (32 active terminals total), the 1756- requires a 36-pin RTB (1756-TBCH or 1756-TBS6H). It cannot accept 20-pin RTBs (1756-TBNH/TBSH).
- Onboard Signal Filtering: Input filter times (Off-to-On and On-to-Off) can be adjusted per channel directly within the Studio 5000 Module Properties dialog to eliminate false transitions caused by high-voltage AC contact bounce or electrical noise.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is the key difference between the 1756-IA16 and the 1756-?
The 1756-IA16 is a non-isolated 120V AC module with channels grouped together on shared commons. The operates at higher voltage (200/240V AC nominal) and features individual channel-to-channel isolation, meaning every single channel has its own isolated return terminal and can be fed from a different AC power source or phase.
Does the 1756- come with the 36-pin terminal block included?
No. Removable Terminal Blocks (1756-TBCH or 1756-TBS6H) are separate accessories. If you are replacing an existing 1756- module, you can snap your original 36-pin RTB directly onto the new surplus unit without re-wiring.
Can I mix different AC voltage phases across channels on the same 1756- module?
Yes. Thanks to individual optical and physical channel isolation (rated up to 250V continuous), you can connect different power supply phases (e.g., Phase A on Channel 0, Phase B on Channel 1) or completely independent 220V AC isolation transformers across channels on the same card without short-circuit risks.
What causes an “I/O Fault” on the 1756- in Studio 5000?
Common causes include an Electronic Keying mismatch between the physical hardware revision and software configuration, loose seating in the backplane socket, or loss of chassis backplane power.
What warranty coverage is provided with this New Surplus card?
We provide a comprehensive 1-Year hardware replacement warranty (depending on your service tier). If any channel or internal component experiences a failure during standard operation, an immediate replacement unit is dispatched directly from our buffer stock.
