Product Introduction & Supply Chain Strategy

The Allen-Bradley 1756-OB32 is a ControlLogix 32-point 24V DC sourcing output module built for applications demanding maximum channel density in a single chassis slot. It controls solenoids, indicator lights, and relay coils across automated assembly lines, material handling systems, and discrete manufacturing processes.

Securing this module as New Surplus delivers an optimal balance between availability and risk mitigation. Bypassing long factory lead times while avoiding the high failure rates of second-hand hardware keeps critical lines running. Buying New Surplus guarantees full thermal and electrical component life, lowering Total Cost of Ownership by preventing unexpected downtime caused by degraded output transistors.

Installation & Configuration Guide

Stage 1: Pre-Installation (Prep & Safety)

  1. Perform full Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO) on the cabinet supply breaker and field power source.
  2. Put on a grounded anti-static wrist strap connected to earth ground before handling the card.
  3. Open the module access door and capture clear photographs of the Removable Terminal Block (RTB) wiring harness and channel labels.
  4. Verify field power supplies deliver clean DC voltage strictly within the 10 to 31.2V DC range.

Stage 2: Removal

  1. Unfasten the retaining screws or release the latching tabs at the top and bottom of the RTB.
  2. Pull the RTB housing directly forward to disengage it from the module housing without placing stress on the field conductors.
  3. Pinch the top and bottom chassis locking tabs on the existing 1756-OB32 module.
  4. Carefully slide the module straight out of the ControlLogix chassis slot, taking care not to bend the backplane connector pins.

Stage 3: Installation (Clone & Seat)

  1. Remove the replacement 1756-OB32 from its ESD-safe bag within the static-controlled workstation.
  2. Verify the mechanical keying tabs match the existing slot and RTB arrangement.
  3. Guide the card edges into the chassis slot tracks and push firmly until both top and bottom locking tabs engage with a clear click.
  4. Align the RTB over the front module connector, push firmly to seat the contacts, and tighten the mounting hardware.

Stage 4: Power-On & Testing

  1. Reapply 24V DC field power to the RTB and verify no field shorts or overload conditions exist.
  2. Power up the ControlLogix backplane chassis.
  3. Observe the module status panel: confirm the OK LED illuminates solid green, signaling healthy backplane communication.
  4. Toggle active outputs via Studio 5000 / RSLogix 5000 to confirm channel LED indicators match physical field device states.

Firmware/Software Versions & Upgrade Notes

  • Recommended Firmware: Major Revision 2.001 or higher (ensure Studio 5000 I/O configuration matches the target hardware revision).
  • Compatibility: Backward compatible with all 1756 ControlLogix chassis revisions and L6, L7, and L8 processors. Set Electronic Keying to “Compatible Module” in Studio 5000 to prevent rack faults during like-for-like hardware swaps.
  • Upgrade Warning: Do not interrupt backplane power or drop communications during a firmware update. Disrupting a flash sequence can permanently corrupt the module microcode. Always verify existing firmware revisions before performing a swap on a live line.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why is this module priced higher than refurbished options online?

This card is sold as true New Surplus with zero operational hours and full factory lifespan. Refurbished modules carry hidden wear on internal switching transistors and power traces that lead to intermittent channel drops. Investing in New Surplus protects your facility from unexpected downtime costs that far exceed the price difference of cheap, used alternatives.

Are these 1756-OB32 units genuine OEM and new?

Yes. Every 1756-OB32 module we supply is guaranteed Original New Surplus. Units come from audited project overstock, system integrator surplus, or plant spares. They undergo complete mechanical, visual, and electrical bench checks in our ESD lab prior to shipment.

Can I hot-swap the 1756- module while the rack is powered?

The 1756 chassis platform supports Removal and Insertion Under Power (RIUP). However, to prevent field arcing or accidental actuation of connected devices, isolate the external 24V DC supply to the RTB prior to detaching the terminal block from the module.

Do I need to reload PLC software or reconfigure the card after a swap?

No. The ControlLogix processor automatically downloads channel configuration settings, pulse settings, and fault actions to the replacement 1756- across the backplane upon power-up, provided the catalog number and keying match.

What warranty is provided with this New Surplus unit?

We supply a full 1-year replacement warranty on all New Surplus 1756- modules. If any operational defect occurs within 12 months under standard working conditions, we will replace the unit immediately from our available stock.
