Product Introduction & Supply Chain Strategy

The B&R DI695 (part number 3DI695.6) is a 16-channel, high-voltage AC digital input module engineered for the B&R System 2005 PLC framework. Designed to monitor field switches, limit sensors, and relay contacts operating on 120/230 VAC control circuits, it provides optical isolation to protect sensitive backplane electronics from harsh industrial transients.

Because the B&R System 2005 series is discontinued by the OEM, securing this part as New Surplus guarantees continuous operational availability without costly rack retrofits. Sourcing genuine, uninstalled surplus eliminates the high failure rates associated with aged, degraded capacitors in refurbished modules. Keeping 1-2 New Surplus DI695 units on-site reduces your Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) by eliminating extended lead times during emergency outages.

Installation & Configuration Guide

Stage 1: Pre-Installation (Prep & Safety)

  1. Execute Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO) on the main 120/230 VAC field supply feeds and the 24 VDC PLC power rack.
  2. Put on an anti-static wrist strap connected to a verified earth ground to prevent Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) damage.
  3. Take a high-resolution photo of the existing TB170 terminal block connections and observe any address coding switches on the module base.

Stage 2: Removal

  1. Unfasten the terminal block retaining screws and carefully pull the TB170 terminal block forward, leaving field wiring intact.
  2. Unscrew the upper and lower mounting screws securing the old 3DI695.6 module to the System 2005 backplane rack.
  3. Pull the module straight out along its guide rails to avoid twisting or bending the rear backplane connector pins.

Stage 3: Installation (Clone & Seat)

  1. Inspect the backplane pins on the new surplus DI695 module for straightness and clean surfaces.
  2. Align the module with the guide rails of the target System 2005 rack slot.
  3. Push the module firmly into place until it seats flush against the backplane connector, then tighten the top and bottom mounting screws.
  4. Align the TB170 terminal block and press it firmly into the front interface until locked.

Stage 4: Power-On & Testing

  1. Restore 5 VDC / 24 VDC rack power before applying high-voltage field power.
  2. Verify that the CPU recognizes the card on the backplane bus (no red SYS/FAIL LED on the processor).
  3. Re-apply the 120/230 VAC field power to the input groups.
  4. Toggle a known input field contact (e.g., a push button) and verify that the corresponding channel LED illuminates green on the front overlay.

Firmware/Software Versions & Upgrade Notes

  • Automation Studio Compatibility: Fully supported across B&R Automation Studio V1.x through V4.x legacy targets supporting System 2005 hardware configuration.
  • Hardware Revisions: The 3DI695.6 revision hardware is backward compatible with earlier 3DI695 hardware iterations.
  • Firmware Notes: The DI695 is a hardware-configured I/O module; logic scanning speed depends on the CPU cycle time, while input signal filtering is fixed at 50 ms internally via RC-coupling circuits.
  • Upgrade Risks: Avoid changing system hardware definitions in Automation Studio during a simple hardware swap. Swapping a physical module with the exact same part number (3DI695.6) requires zero software recompilation or firmware flashing.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is this B&R 3DI695.6 module brand new or refurbished?

This module is strictly New Surplus (Original Unused stock). It has never been installed or powered in a production facility. It is not pulled from a decommissioned line, nor has it undergone board-level repairs.

Why should I buy New Surplus instead of a cheaper refurbished card?

Refurbished AC input modules often harbor dried-out electrolytic capacitors and stressed optocouplers that fail under temperature fluctuations. A failed $200 refurbished module can stall a production line, costing tens of thousands of dollars per hour. Buying New Surplus ensures OEM-level reliability and full functional lifespan.

Is the B&R System 2005 DI695 module obsolete?

Yes, B&R has officially transitioned the System 2005 product line to End-Of-Life (EOL) status. New Surplus stock is the primary method for plant engineers to maintain active operations without undergoing a full controller migration.

Does the module come with the wiring terminal block?

No. The removable terminal block (part number TB170) is an independent accessory and is sold separately. If you are replacing an existing card, your original TB170 terminal block plugs directly into this replacement card.

What is the warranty coverage on this unit?

All our New Surplus B&R modules come with a full 1-year functional warranty from the date of purchase, giving you identical peace of mind to factory-direct supply.
